This is my final project. The assignment is to be in APA format.
For those reading that are not in school will find this a little odd. APA requires writing in 3rd person.
3rd person is not friendly on a personal blog.
Please know this is my journey, my assessment and my goal setting.
The events of August 6 are still unclear and your prayers are requested.
Let me know if you see an typos!!!
Enjoy and Learn!!
The integral
healing map consists of five key principles (Dacher, 2006). Each is vital to
healing. Healing is holistic, evolutionary, intentional, person-centered and dynamic
(Dacher, 2006). As one navigates through the landscape of illness, disease or
just life, it is easy to become confused and disoriented. Sometimes it is best
to be still. In the stillness and quiet, a path may reveal itself. This path
will include assessing the current situation, setting goal, creating a
strategy, and committing to the process.
At first glance,
all seems well on the surface, yet the heart is troubled. A cloudless sky can
darken with a storm within minutes, so can a seemingly healthy person can
become ill. Just as meteorologist categorizes hurricanes and tornadoes, one can
assess the physical, spiritual and psychology health within him or herself. Without
radar, a storm seems to hide from plain sight as an illness that appears to be
sudden but truthfully has been brewing for some time(Schlitz, M., Amorok, T., &
Micozzi, M, 2005). To create “personal radar”, one should assess
the current conditions. Physical well-being is more that the “lack of illness”
(Dacher, 2006). It is a condition of well-being and health (Dacher, 2006). Spiritual
health is not just connecting to the Savior. It is a listening and accepting
the direction. Psychological well-being is not having all the answers (Dacher,
2006). It is finding peace in the knowledge one does have.
For Mrs. Sonya
Arrington, the picture in her mind of her own well-being appeared much sunnier.
On a scale of one to ten, ten being the beautiful clear skies, Sonya saw herself
at a six physically, an eight spiritual and due to the health of those around
her, she assessed her psychological health as a 4.8. She felt that her lack of
control greatly affected her own mental health. Looking at these with a new understanding
leads one to reassess the overall calm that actually is a storm.
While the storm
is not within the control of those in the path, they do control their reaction.
One can create a true peace in the face of the storm by practice meditations
and exploring whole body awareness. After studying and practicing inner health
practices, Sonya has a better picture of her past health as well as a new
outlook on her mental health.
In a current
assessment, Sonya is much stronger psychology scoring a solid eight. August 6,
2014, Sonya faced a “category 5 hurricane”. In preparation a weekend of fun
with the grandson, Sonya scheduled a larger than normal day of clients. In
the midst of seeing clients back-to-back, she received news of something not
right with her 70-year-old mother who lives two and a half hours away. The lack
of control in this situation and the “unknowns” could have led to a complete shutdown
of both the mental and physical part of Sonya. Even in her crying out to her
Savior could be different and not as it should be, yet Sonya took a fifteen-minute
pause and used the subtle mind meditation to quiet her mind. This redirected
her energies into a more productive direction. Currently, Sonya would assess
her physical health at an eight, her spiritual health at a nine and her psychological
health at an eight. Sonya is ready for the storms of life. The storm is still
raging but Sonya is weathering differently.
In order to
prepare for these storms, Sonya will need to “pack the hurricane box”. This box
will include a stronger desire for peace and calm, a clearer picture of the
situation, and a practiced use of the tools within her mental well being “black
bag”. These tools and mental awareness do not come from desire; they will come
from practice. Sonya will need to practice her meditations on a daily bases. In
order to do this, she will rise fifteen minutes early to begin the day with a
quiet time as well as end the day with a physical meditation of yoga, tai chi
or Qi gong. The physical meditations will help with physical health and
breathing. The breathing is vital to seeing a situation as it truly is not in a
“what-if” perspective. For her spiritual health, Sonya will continue to seek
His face in scripture and prayer. Sonya also plans to attend Newsprings Church
at the campus at least twice a month in addition to her online services. These
goals will need a commitment and accountability to help Sonya stay on track.
With this latest
family health crisis, Sonya has the commitment level to make these goals become
a reality. In order to maintain it after the crisis passes Sonya plans to
continue her blog started in her Creating Wellness class. This blog helps her
focus on the needs of herself and in sharing her experiences she feels it helps
others. In this way, spending a few minutes on her mental health does not carry
the guilt it once did. With a packed schedule and so many others to care for,
Sonya had placed her health at the bottom of the list. She now sees that this
does no one any good. She must make the time. Her goals and the caring for her
health will open the doors to an overall better environment of healing for
those she loves.
In the next six
months, Sonya plans to lose the excess eight to ten pounds of stress weight she
is carrying for better physical health. She sees a better spiritual health in
reconnect with the church on a personal level. Psychologically, in six months,
Sonya plans to see her glass as half full or half enjoyed. By seeing the
positive and realist, the storms of life will lose their punch on her whole
health.
In this way, her
health will be holistic or whole and clean. It will be evolutionary as she evolves
from the current somewhat positive yet stressful, to a calmer and clearer way
of handling life’s stressors. It will be intentional and requires Sonya to
practice daily. It is Sonya-centered and this is for her well-being as well as
the well being of those she cares for and loves. It will also be dynamic. She will share her
experiences yet each will be different and special. This is integral health.
